Amyloidosis

General description of the disease

Amyloidosis is a disease in which protein metabolism is disturbed, as a result of which a protein-polysaccharide complex (amyloid) is formed and deposited in the tissues.

Amyloidosis happens:

  • primary – cells change in the presence of monoclonal hypermaglobulemia, myeloma and Waldenstrom macroglobulemia;
  • secondary – the cause of this type of amyloidosis is chronic inflammatory processes (for example, rheumatoid arthritis, malaria, leprosy, tuberculosis, osteomyelitis, bronchiectasis);
  • idiopathic (family) – enzymes have defects from childhood, from generation to generation;
  • age (senile) – disorders begin already in old age, due to various functional failures in the body;
  • dialysis – this type develops due to blood purification in acute and chronic kidney disease (their failure) – hemodialysis.

The main reasons for the violation of protein metabolism:

  1. 1 Genetic predisposition.
  2. 2 Carrying out the above procedure – hemodialysis.
  3. 3 The presence of acute, chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases.
  4. 4 The age group after 40 years is most susceptible to amyloidosis.

Symptoms of amyloidosis:

  • Gastrointestinal tract: the tongue increases in size, swallowing function is impaired, stomach upset or, conversely, constipation, there may be deposits in the form of a tumor in the intestine or acorn (this is extremely rare), the presence of belching, heaviness in the abdomen, nausea after eating;
  • cardiovascular system: heart failure, disturbed heart rhythm, myocardium;
  • CNS: frequent headaches, increased sweating, dizzy, impaired sensitivity of the extremities, tingling of the tips of the fingers and toes, impotence, enuresis, fecal incontinence;
  • cartilaginous system: dense swelling of the joints, numbness of the tips of the hands and feet, throbbing pain in the fingers, polyarthritis, periarthritis;
  • tissue amyloidosis: enlarged spleen;
  • respiratory system: persistent bronchitis, hoarse voice, lung tumors;
  • accompanying symptoms: lesions of the skin (various nodes, papules, “eyeglass symptom” – bruising around the eyes), thyroid disorder, adrenal insufficiency, impaired renal function (present in all forms of amyloidosis), anemia, increased ESR, cholesterol levels.

Dangerous and harmful products for amyloidosis

Potassium is washed out by confectionery and various sweets, caffeinated products and alcoholic beverages. Also, potassium leaves the body due to excessive physical exertion and stress.

Naturally, you need to limit foods containing protein:

  • tofu;
  • egg whites;
  • marshmallows;
  • soy milk;
  • lean veal and beef;
  • rabbit, chicken meat;

Small amounts of starch are found in pumpkin, carrots, tomatoes, garlic, asparagus, cabbage, radishes, and parsley. Therefore, the emphasis on these products is not worth it.
