A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of premature death

Sitting at your desk for too long can increase your risk of premature death. Scientists analyzed data from studies from 54 countries: time spent in a seated position for more than three hours a day, population size, total mortality rates and actuarial tables (life tables compiled from insurance companies on the number of insured and deaths). The results of the study were published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (American Journal of Preventive Medicine).

More than 60% of people around the world spend more than three hours sitting a day. Researchers estimate that this contributed to some extent to 433 deaths annually between 2002 and 2011.

Scientists have found that, on average, in different countries, people spend about 4,7 hours a day in a sitting position. They estimate that a 50% reduction in this time could lead to a 2,3% reduction in all-cause mortality.

“This is the most complete data to date,” said lead author Leandro Resende, a doctoral student at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine, “but we do not know if there is a causal relationship.” Nevertheless, in any case, it is useful to interrupt the motionless sitting at the table: “There are things that we are able to do. Get up as often as possible. “

A link between time spent sitting and mortality has been found in other studies as well. In particular, those who get up from their chairs for just two minutes an hour to walk have a 33% reduction in their risk of premature death compared to people who sit almost continuously (read more about this here).

So try to move as often as possible throughout the day. These simple tips will help you stay active while working full time at the office.
